We’ve talked about risk management in the context of items being misplaced or lost, but we haven’t talked about the benefits of an organized collection in case of a true natural disaster… for example: a Hurricane.
We don’t mean to sound ominous or menacing, but the reality is that we’ve had A LOT of horrific natural disasters lately, so you need to be prepared. Just like you have an insurance policy on your home or your car, you should have a policy on your most prized possessions.
I know, I know. No one wants to think this could ever happen to them. But the truth of the matter is, it has been happening a lot in recent years, and most recently in the last few months. These events have been catastrophic to peoples lives, their homes, and their legacy. Obviously, a catalogued collection is not going to miraculously save the day in a hurricane or a fire, however, it can be an invaluable resource to an Artist and their team in assessing ones losses, filing accurate claims, and helping to quickly and efficiently become financially whole in the wake of a disaster.
This is obviously not the most exciting topic to discuss in regards to an Artist’s collection, but it is an incredibly serious and valuable one, and should be considered immediately, pending where your belongings are located. While most Artist’s have an umbrella policy on items stored in a facility or an estimation on items being stored at their home, it’s rarely detailed to the extent needed to file claims for accurate recoupment of loss. It’s incredibly hard to file insurance claims and asses damages without paperwork to back up items that are damaged, lost or destroyed, and it’s EVEN MORE challenging to recoup losses on items that you aren’t sure were there to begin with.
A catalogued collection can help an Artist and their team be prepared to navigate the murky waters and get back on track in the wake of such devastation.
Until next month!
