While reviewing and organizing your belongings may seem like the last thing you want to be worrying about during this pandemic - we know that a lot of people are turning to organization as a way to feel some sense of control in a world that is very scary right now.
People are organizing their closets and their garage. They are pulling things for Goodwill donations and throwing things out like crazy. Not your friends? Well, that seems to be all we’re seeing on social feeds these days. Organized closets and a lot of people baking bread.
Anyway… while this may seem like an unusual way for people to cope during these unprecedented times, if it’s helping you feel more in control, go for it. We are just here to help you through this process.
START SMALL AND FINISH. For the last few weeks, we’ve all been at home, all of the time. While this may seem like a great time to go through things, it may also be a little more challenging with more bodies in one place. So we suggest starting small. Know what you want to do, make a plan, and set a time to go through it - and FINISH it. If you want to go through your children’s old toys in the garage - pick a time to go through a box together and finish the project. The same is true of your closet, bookshelf, or kitchen pantry. Pick one area to conquer at a time - finish it, and then move on. If you have too many active projects, it will definitely start to feel more cluttered, so completion is key.
CONSOLIDATE. Once you complete a project - process your belongings. I know it sounds formal, but it’s necessary. Do you now have items to go to Goodwill? Put a bag together in the garage for DONATIONS. Do you have items that can be thrown out? Put them in the garbage. Do you have papers to be shredded? Shred them! Papers to file or scan? Do it. And do it immediately. This is a huge part of each organizational project. Too often people half complete a project and are left with a bigger mess than when they started.
BE GENTLE. These are hard times, and everyone is coping differently. If you don’t want to organize or be productive in this way during this time, you shouldn’t. Be kind to yourself and listen to how you are feeling. There is no guide as to how to cope during these times. Many people are trying to use this time to tackle home tasks and projects, which is why we are giving these tips. But at the end of the day, you need to approach these times in whatever way works best for you.
Until next month!
