Since it’s Independence Day, we wanted to talk about freedom. In this case, freedom from your stuff.
While many of us are in the now very trending mindset of minimalism, there are also many of us who are not. The emotional control and power that some people allow their stuff to have over them can be paralyzing, and everyone who experiences this comes from a very different mindset. Some people feel that they should keep a seemingly useless item so they don’t have to buy it again, in the off chance they need it again in the future. There are also many who feel a compulsion to keep buying a specific item - when they haven’t used what they already have. While others feel an overwhelming sentimental attachment towards pieces that they will never wear again or haven’t used in a decade.
We are all about holding onto items that have personal and professional sentiment, but the problem is, is that not everything REALLY needs to be saved. And, if it should be saved, it’s needs to be organized because these items “that could be useful one day” are of no use to anyone if you can’t find them.
If you know that it’s hard for you to part with things, it may be time to bring in someone to help you through the process. An unbiased professional can help review and organize your belongings in your collection without emotional attachment, and can help you draw the line between sentiment, essentials, and what is actually useful for you and your legacy.
Don’t let your stuff hold you hostage. It’s time to organize your collection and set yourself free of the excess baggage.
Until next month!
