Organizing a collection is nothing new. Most people organize their closet and their desk; some people organize their cabinets; and we’re pretty sure most people organize their finances, too. The bottom line is, everyone has some element of organization in their life, but is a catalogued collection something you should add to the list?
First off, who does an organized catalogue benefit? In theory, it could really benefit all of us in some way. We’d be lying if we didn’t admit that we have secretly fantasized about having our own closet cataloguing computer program like Cher used in the opening scenes of Clueless. But in reality, a catalogue like this most greatly benefits Artists and musicians with a LOT of things, or a growing collection. In the case of Artists or musicians, organization is, or should be, present in almost every element of their career. But, when it comes to their belongings, organization can sometimes fall a little short because it doesn’t have as much of an obvious pressing and immediate need.
As Artist’s grow, so does the size of their collection. So, even if you’re just starting out or evolving, it’s still a great idea to begin to implement a cataloging system NOW. Why? For the same basic reasons that an Artist who is maybe a little more established would want to catalogue their collection. They do it because they want to know what they have. They do it because they want to know where things are. They do it because they want to have a quick reference guide when needed. And they do it to build a system and foundation for the evolution of their collection throughout their career.
As we’ve mentioned, establishing a catalogue may not be something that you need, NOW. Or maybe it is? It also may never be something that seems to hold a pressing need, NOW. But, when it does become urgent, and it likely will - it will take some time to develop and implement. That's why establishing a foundation early on, can be an incredibly valuable Artist asset.
Until next month!
