Do you feel stressed by all of your belongings? This might seem like a silly question, but you would be shocked by how many people are not only overwhelmed by all of the things they have to do, but also all of the things that they have. Why? Because things carry weight, both physically and mentally. It’s literally heavy stuff.

While many of us are adapting to a more minimalist mindset, we still live in a material world, and are constantly accumulating things. While most of these things are useful, we still spend thousands of dollars buying, and then storing things that we have never used, and we hold onto things that we will never use again. It sounds crazy, but it’s true.

So what do people do with all of their extra stuff? The first go to is usually the garage. For many, the garage can become the catch all. From the things we don’t need, but don’t want to get rid of, to the things that hold sentimental value. The garage can become your personal storage unit. However, for those that don’t have a garage, most turn to actual storage facilities where they pay thousands of dollars a year to store, move, and transport things that they don’t want, and/or will never use again.

To us, the financials of this alone sounds stressful. Especially when you figure that most storage facilities cost at least $100/month. Surprisingly though, for many, the actual reduction process can be the most stressful part of all - not the financial aspects. People are overwhelmed at the idea of how to tackle these larger projects, and because they don’t know where to begin, they don’t start. Unless, of course, they have an objective outside party to help them work through the process. Not only can this process be overwhelming from a physical and financial standpoint, it can also be an incredibly emotional process for people to let go of things that they feel are sentimental.

Ultimately, all of us experience stress and anxiety from time to time, but your things should NOT be the source of this stress. It’s time to take control of your belongings, and stop letting your belongings take control of you. It’s time to get rid of the things you don’t need, use, or want, and it’s time to evaluate and understand what you have. By reducing the amount of items you are storing and holding onto now, you can reduce not only the cost of storage, but also the stress and anxiety of going through these things in the future.

Until next month!
