One word - Consolidation.

Consolidation is KEY when you begin organizing your belongings. Why? Because unless you know what you have, you don’t know where to begin. As most Artist Teams are cyclical and have not been with an Artist since the beginning of their career, most do not know every item in an Artist’s collection, and therefore they do not know where everything is located. That may be hard to believe, but it’s very true. By consolidating a specific type of career item to a single location, be it an Artist’s home or a storage facility, an Artist and their Team will be able to easily identify everything that they have to work with, and they will be able to easily identify what items may be missing.

“Missing? What do you mean, what’s missing?”

All too often, Artist’s and their Teams (and people in general), have items spread across rooms, homes, storage facilities… even countries. This makes it not only challenging for people to access items quickly and efficiently, but it also makes it very hard to find what you are looking for. For example: when all of your clothing is not in your closet, it’s very challenging to find the specific jacket you are looking for, and it often requires a trip to the laundry or sometimes the dry cleaners to locate it. The same is true of documentation. When all of your important paperwork is not filed or scanned into your computer properly, it’s very hard to find this necessary information when you need it. This holds true for every element of your life and your career. While these are both pretty obvious examples, many people still struggle with consolidating and bringing like items together, and they end up paying for it - literally.

In the case of Artists, it can become increasingly challenging to access important career pieces when they are spread between different locations. When an Artist’s Team is able to bring similar items together, they are able to understand what an Artist has, save time and money in retrieval costs, and aid in simplifying the eventual cataloging process. However, when items are in different locations, it can become difficult for an Artist’s Team, Assistant, and Family, to locate items when needed. And, as we’ve mentioned before, things are often misplaced, grow legs, and disappear in the process. This is not intentional. However, when you have a lot of people working with a lot of different pieces, in a lot of different places, things are bound to get lost, and sometimes, no one notices this until the item is long gone. As you can see, having your belongings in different locations can be costly both financially and in wasted time and resources. The sooner an Artist is able to bring their collection to one location, the easier it will become for both access and retrieval.

While one should expect and understand that there will be a cost associated with moving and shipping items, the time and money saved in simple accessibility, and the anguish of tracking things down, can make up for this cost MANY times over. And let's not forget about access fees! Yes, when items are stored at certain facilities, there are often fees charged to retrieve and access your items on-site… items that you are already paying to store! Crazy, but this really happens. Single location access saves time and can save an Artist big money.

The bottom line is that consolidation is key. It makes it easy for everyone involved in an Artist’s camp, and it helps create a sense of control for an Artist and their Team members when they are faced with an overwhelming amount of items in a collection. Knowing what an Artist has, knowing that everything is in the same place, and knowing that everything is easily retrievable is the first step to getting and staying organized.

Until next month!
