You may be asking… why is it important to catalogue my belongings? Well, as it relates to Artists and musicians, there are a number of reasons, but today we are just going to talk about the most obvious, and that’s general organization.
If you’ve ever worked in the music business - or ANY business for that matter, then you know all too well that the key to accomplishing your goals is hard work and an organized system or approach to attainting those goals. It’s a universal concept. Systems save people time. Systems save people money, and they also provide a structure and framework to attain those goals. For many, it's considered a foundation for success.
Having worked in the music business for over a decade, we know that organization is placed on every area of an Artists career. Countless hours are spent on developing the music, an album roll out, and routing a tour. There’s always a touring, events, and press calendar in place. But, attention is not often paid to developing a system for an Artist’s belongings, including iconic career pieces like costumes, awards, records, and memorabilia. Items that could be used or needed for other Artist goals. These items are often overlooked because people don’t see the relevance of an organized system NOW. And the problem is, that once a system is desired - it’s usually something that is needed immediately, or yesterday even, and a catalogue does not manifest over night.
So, why would a catalogued inventory of an Artist’s belongings be beneficial? If you’ve worked with an Artist in some capacity, you’ve undoubtedly had to pull a costume for an event or a last minute repair; or you’ve had to track down an award to go on display; or pull a signed photo or record for a charity donation. And when those situations arise, what is pulled or used is often what is available or what can be found before a deadline, not always the first choice.
SO… what if you could expand your options? What if an Artist knew what they had and where it was? What if you had an easy reference system that took the stress out of trying to track things down at crunch time? Wouldn’t that make everyone’s life a little easier? The answer is YES! Let us know what you think in the comments below.
Until next month!
