Historical Documentation

When people think about an Artist’s collection they always want to know about the “cool stuff,” i.e. the costumes, the awards, the masters, the set pieces, and the instruments. They are mainly interested in the items that have visual appeal. Everything else doesn’t have quite the same draw. However, one of the MOST valuable things you can find in an Artist’s collection is paper.

Yes, I said paper. It’s probably hard for most to comprehend in the digital age, when every bill, contract, and check stub has a pdf copy that you can save to your files and look up at a moments notice. But, when we think about legacy Artists, or Artists that started their career BC (Before Computers)… most of their early important historical paperwork and documentation is not readily or digitally available.

So where should you look first? Well, as most Artist’s teams have transitioned over the span of their career, paperwork is often lost or misplaced. But, if you are lucky, some historical paperwork can be found in storage - usually unorganized and without an inventory.

What does this documentation look like? Important historical paperwork usually consists of touring and recording contracts, itineraries, songwriters contracts, handwritten lyrics, charts, advertisements, articles, photos, copyrights… you name it, we’ve found it.

All of this data can become incredibly important for a multitude of reasons, and once you find it it's time to digitize. We will get into that a little more in the coming months, but it's good to remember that information that's inaccessible doesn't serve an Artist or their legacy.

Until next month!
