Person Reviewing Checklist and Organizing Paperwork

We’ve been talking about organization in the context of an Artists' Collection, but it’s also imperative in your every day life. Whether it’s a grocery list, a calendar, your email, or a bill pay schedule, we use organizational systems every day. And let's face it, when things aren’t organized, it’s hard to get things done. That may seem like a no brainer, but for many, it’s a very hard practice to establish. We’ve put together a list of the top three reasons we think it’s hard to get (and stay) organized, and how you can start today.

WE LIVE IN THE WORLD OF “I’M SO BUSY” - Taking the time to organize your closet, checkbook, or email takes time, so the idea of doing this may seem low on the priority list, especially when there are so many other things you could be doing with your free time. But, we promise you, the rewards are well worth the time put in. We are pretty confident you will feel lighter, accomplished, and a sense of relief once your inbox reads EMPTY or your checkbook is balanced, and that feeling will translate into other areas of your life. You’re also establishing a system that will save you time and money down the line, because time = money.

WHERE TO BEGIN? - It’s the age old question. Think about your email: there are so many ways to file and organize. Should you delete or archive? File by person or project? Everyone has a different style and system, and the idea of figuring out the system that works best for YOU can feel daunting. People become so overwhelmed by the options, that they don’t even begin. We call this, analysis paralysis. But by starting with something simple, one room in the house or one cabinet that needs an overhaul, you can begin to see the results and build the confidence to move on to bigger and more challenging projects.

MAINTENANCE - Just like New Years resolutions, a lot of people start off strong. But after a couple weeks or months they get busy, then they get lazy (sorry, but this happens), and their enthusiasm tapers off, and they stop. They end up back at square one and have to start all over. This again, takes time and may not seem worth it a second time around. Staying organized requires maintenance and discipline, and in order to get there you need to build the routine so it doesn’t feel like work. It’s just like muscle memory. The more you do it, the more it will become second nature.

Until next month!
