Talk to me about your closet. Yes, you! Come on, be honest… is it organized?… It is? Good for you! That means you’re on the right track to getting your personal collection in order. Ok - so, you have an organized closet. Is it arranged by type of clothing (shirts, pants, dresses), or by color (black, white, neutral), or maybe it’s by size?
Too many possibilities? We thought you might say that. Now, think about how complicated it can be for an Artist with years and YEARS of iconic touring and event clothing…. With all these pieces and options, can you see how complicated cataloguing a collection can become?
As we’ve said before, when you begin to organize any type of collection, the focus should always start with the framework. The more organized the framework, the easier this process will become and the better it will serve an Artist and those on their team for future use and access. After this has been established you can sequence, and from there, you can begin the documentation process.
So, while we’re on the subject of closets, let's talk about costumes. What is the best way for an Artist to catalogue and sequence their costumes? Well, this all really depends on the Artist. You want to create a simple system that is easy for anyone on an Artist’s team to access at a moments notice. It should be effortless.
For example: Does an Artist like to work with specific designers? If so, it may be best to organize by designer and sequence based on the event or the year it was worn. Or, maybe it makes more sense to start with tour costumes, and organize everything chronologically by tour, and then arrange in set list order? Or, maybe it’s best to start with iconic music video costumes, and sequence them chronologically by release date?
As you can see, there are infinite ways to do this. That’s why the first thing you must do before you even begin to catalogue a collection is to establish the type of system that will best serve the Artist’s needs and goals for the future, keeping in mind accessibility and simplicity.
Until next month!
