We’ve discussed many reasons why an organized collection is a benefit to the Artist and their career… but one very important and often difficult reason we have yet to discuss, is death.
No one likes to think about the inevitable, but the truth is, none of us… not even famous musicians will live forever. There will come a time when all of us are no longer here, and when that time comes there will be so many things that an Artist’s family and team will need to address. Reviewing what’s in storage should not be one of them. This should be all mapped out, organized, and ready to review and access when needed.
When people pass away, the last thing that a family member wants to do is go through their stuff. Not only is it exhausting, it’s physically and emotional draining, and can bring up so many emotions. Establishing a catalogue of ones collection in storage alleviates these stressors and can give the Artist, their family, and their team the peace of mind that everything is in order.
Imagine the following scenarios. 1). A family member visits a storage facility to review boxes in question. They see pallets with dozens of boxes and immediately turn around. They decide to continue to pay storage because the thought of reviewing everything is too daunting. Meanwhile, many of these boxes contain important items to be pulled, and there are also many boxes that should be reviewed and then disposed of. OR worse… 2). A family member arrives to review boxes, begins, and realizes they have no idea what anything is and decide to toss all the boxes to “save on the cost of storage and stress of going through everything.” Both scenarios don’t serve the Artist and they don’t serve their family or legacy.
By cataloguing your collection when you are here to give history and give context, you are helping ensure that the things that are important to you, and the things that hold value personally, are kept for your personal and professional legacy.
Bottom line - organizing your collection is not only a gift you are giving to your family, but a gift you are giving your legacy.
Until next month!
