Why Creating a Catalogue is Actually an Investment in an Artist’s Future

I vividly remember one day, about a year ago, when I was speaking with my old boss and he said, “Time is our most precious asset. It is finite. You can’t keep it. You only have a certain amount of it, and once it runs out, you can’t get it back. It's our most valuable asset, trust me, you’ll soon realize this.” Now in theory, I think we all understand this, but it’s not something that we often think about in our day to day lives. To have someone bring that reality to the forefront of your mind, really helps one take pause as to how little time we really have and how we should use it wisely.
So, how do you invest in saving time as it relates to your business? Most hire more staff or assistants, and many outsource projects to other companies that can produce or provide a service, product, or result faster.
Like any business, Artists often have a million things going on, and so little time to get it all done. That's why they have a large team working full time to help them accomplish these goals. Unfortunately, as we’ve mentioned, time is not always paid to an Artist’s collection or catalogue because it doesn’t seem to hold as much immediate value. In fact, it’s often moved to the bottom of the list.
However, a catalogue jumps in priority as soon as you begin to talk insurance, appraisals, museums, retrospectives, auctions, or when pieces are needed at a moments notice for this or that. And in those moments, it can become a mad scramble to pull things together. This search party often wastes many hours of time, and is something that could have been avoided with a simple system in place. It also allows an Artist to have access to a visual catalogue of what they need or want, as opposed to what they can find or is available at that time.
It’s interesting, because on one hand, the implementation of a catalogue is often delayed because it can take so much time to put together. But on the flip side, a catalogue can become a MASSIVE time saver and Artist resource, which is why if a catalogue sounds like something that would be right for you, it's time get going!
Ultimately, creating a catalogue saves time, but it should also be viewed as an investment: an investment in an Artist’s future, an investment in ones collection, and an investment in ones legacy.
Until next month!
